Conference: Nationalism, East and West - Civic and Ethnic Conceptions of Nationhood

The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN) is
holding its 18th Annual Conference, entitled "Nationalism, East and
West: Civic and Ethnic Conceptions of Nationhood", Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday, April 15-17, 2008, at the London School of Economics.

It has long been standard in the field of nationalism studies to
classify nations according to which principle serves to unify the
nation. The distinction between the Western, political type of
nationalism, and Eastern, genealogical nationalism as systematised by
Hans Kohn in 1945 has been used, extended and adjusted by scholars of
nationalism to conceptualise a framework of "inclusive" nationalism
based on citizenship and territory and "exclusive" nationalism based on
common ethnic ties and descent. This conference seeks to assess the

The Open Society Justice Initiative, an operational program of the Open Society Institute (OSI), joins with Central European University (CEU) to announce the Justice Initiative Fellows Program for 2008-2010. The aim of the program is to support and further develop a network of lawyers and activists working internationally on human rights-related issues.

The Justice Initiative Fellows Program is a two-year program of study and practical work experience. Up to ten applicants will be selected to participate in the 2008 program. Applicants from the following regions and countries are eligible: Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Central/South America.

This is a call for papers for the RC06 Lisbon Conference to be held at the Institute of Social and Political Sciences of Technical University of Lisbon from the 9th to the 13th of September 2008.
The theme of the conference “Family Diversity and Gender” will be an opportunity to explore theoretically and empirically the contemporary multiplicity of family forms and gender issues.

Deadlines
The deadline for proposals of thematic sessions is 30th of November, 2007.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is 31st of January, 2008.
The deadline for acceptance decision of abstracts is 15th of March, 2008.

ISA Competition

The International Sociological Association (ISA) announces the organization of the Fifth Worldwide Competition for Junior Sociologists engaged in social research. The winners will be invited to participate in the XVII World Congress of Sociology which will take place in Göteborg, Sweden, July 2010. The winners’ papers will be considered for publication in English, subject to editorial decision and revision, in the ISA’s journal International Sociology, or in another ISA publication.

By Junior Scholars we mean people who obtained his/her first Master’s degree (or an equivalent graduate diploma) in sociology or in a related discipline, less than 10 years prior to May 1st, 2009. In case of joint or multiple authorship, this rule applies to all authors of the submitted paper.

The five-year European Science Foundation-funded Scientific Programme
"Representations of the Past: The Writing of National Histories in
Europe (NHIST)" runs since 2003. It aims to

- analyse in depth national historiographies and their relationship to
wider national historical cultures,
- study systematically the construction, erosion and reconstruction of
national histories across a wide variety of European states,
- bridge the existing historiographical gap within Europe by bringing
together the histories of Western and Eastern Europe,
- combine cultural transfer and comparative approaches in examining the
relationship between national historiographies and national historical
cultures.

Marie Curie SocAnth: International PhD Programme promoting Anthropology in Central and Eastern Europe

AIMED AT EASTERN EUROPEANS PRIMARILY

Marie Curie SocAnth is an EU funded training programme now in its second year aiming to promote the development of anthropological research and teaching in Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe.

SocAnth will be offering approximately 14 short term visits to the network to PhD students from or working in our target region for the next academic year, beginning in September 2008. This includes one twelve month and a six month attachment to any non-residents of Romania who wish, while based at Babes Bolyai University, to research or write about Romania or Moldova. We particularly welcome applications from ‘outsiders’ working in tour target region and eastern Europeans who research outside of their home country.
